ESO is the intergovernmental European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere.
On behalf of its member states ESO operates a suite of the world's most advanced ground-based astronomical telescopes located at the La Silla Paranal Observatory in the Atacama desert in Chile.  At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope facility composed of four 8m class telescopes (Unit Telescope UT) and four 2m class telescopes (Auxiliary Telescope AT). In addition, two new telescopes (VST and VISTA) are under commissioning.
